International Eventing Rider

Bettina Hoy

Bettina Hoy had impressive successes in equestrianism from a young age, including winning Olympic bronze and team gold at the World Equestrian Games, and she now focuses on her career as a trainer while promoting fitness for riders.

Impressive Successes From the Start

Bettina Hoy sat on a horse for the first time at six months and started riding at the age of three. Her enthusiasm for horses and equestrianism continued in her youth. At the age of 12, she took part in her first eventing class - her trainer was her father. "My father was by far my most important instructor. I have learned the feeling of the horse in principle."

Bettina Hoy rode a long time in several disciplines, in addition to eventing she also competed in jumping and dressage tests up to S level (FEI level). Because of a particularly talented horse in eventing, she decided, after a few years, to stay with this discipline. By the time she got the horse "Peace Time", she realized that she wanted to ride on the international scene. With him, she rode the world championships in Luhmßhlen as the first German woman and won at the age of 21 years Olympic bronze in Los Angeles. Another big hit a few years later was winning team gold at the 2006 World Equestrian Games.

Her Career as a Trainer

In 1991 she graduated in Warendorf from her exam to become a horse master with Stensbeck. She lived with her former husband, Andrew Hoy, in England for twelve years and managed "Gatcombe Park", the private manor of the British Princess Anne. During this time, she taught riders of various nationalities in all disciplines, including the daughter of Princess Anne.

In January 2017, Bettina Hoy started her job as the national trainer of the Dutch eventing riders. She has steadily proven success both as a trainer and as a rider. For example, while her student Jonelle Price won at the beginning of May 2018 in Badminton, Bettina Hoy was still competing, winning the CCI 3 * at Blenheim Palace International Horse Trials 2016, as well as becoming the German champion for the fourth time in Luhmßhlen 2017. She is now putting her competition career on hold to focus on her training activities.

Fitness as Passion and Key to Success

For Bettina Hoy, the rider’s fitness has a huge impact on their balance in the saddle and ability to give precise aids. With her fitness videos at wehorse she wants to pass on her knowledge and share her best exercises with other riders.

Only being fit yourself enables you to demand the highest performance of your horse. Her motto: "A horse can lend the rider speed and strength but a wise rider never forgets that it is only a loan."
